This country respite designed for foodie retirees moving from Los Angeles is located just east of the city of Napa. It features views west to vineyards and east to a sweeping valley. Charred wood siding, stucco, and thermally improved aluminum windows were explored in various configurations to provide a durable and efficient envelope. Small and compact, the linear space plan is opened up by 18’ wide glass sliding doors to terraces on both the east and west facades. A second, stacked floor at the north end provides a self-contained guesthouse. A PV solar array will be incorporated into the roof, providing approximately 10 kWh of electrical power while a rainwater cistern will provide a stable source of water for onsite irrigation, including a vegetable garden.
