What's my story?

I have always had a passion for two things: beauty in design and the beauty of the great outdoors.  The pursuit of these passions led me circuitously from my home state of Michigan to Oregon via Texas and Washington.  After completing a Bachelor of Environmental Design at Texas A&M University in 1992, I felt the allure of the North Cascades and I struck out for Seattle, Washington.  There, I went to work for Feathered Friends as the production manager for two years helping to create the finest down and fleece products for mountaineering and spent my spare time enjoying the majesty of the area.

During my time in Seattle, I met many people passionate about the beauty of the northwest's natural environment and it's important place in human life.  One of those people was architect Robert Swain. I worked with Bob for a couple of years where I refined an understanding of how to create an authentic yet contextual sense of place.  Inspired by Bob’s passion for design, I went on to receive a Master's of Architecture at the University of Oregon in 1999.

In 1999 I went to work with Holst Architecture as a Project Manager.  It was an exciting 10 years to work in Portland architecture.  We designed and completed projects that were literally at the city's edge.  Today, many of those projects are vibrant district centers, such as The Jean Vollum Natural Capital Center and the Enterprise Building.  I was personally inspired by the ways in which these projects combined the best ideas in design and sustainability.

The ideals that led me west have now motivated me to start DOMINEKARCHITECTURE, LLC.  I believe that through collaboration with clients, we can promote powerful concepts like authenticity of experience and environmental stewardship to create architecturally strong and inspiring spaces.  I work closely with clients, using the combined mediums of hand sketching and computer rendering, so that together we can quickly investigate options to achieve the project’s functional needs and creative vision as translated through my expertise.

Good architecture expands people’s understanding of what is possible, what is beautiful, what constitutes good design, and how combining these concepts can lead to better living and working environments.
